Women at the center of climate solutions

Friends of Barefoot College-USA has crafted a strategic plan for 2019 that elevates our funding priorities focused on gender equality and climate solutions in new and exciting ways. In diverse places like hurricane-stricken Puerto Rico and deep in the Amazon Rain Forest of Brazil, women are being trained as solar engineers and leaders who will help their communities while protecting the environment. Throughout the year we will report on projects that include:

  • Solar mamas from South America helping to train a new generation of women in Puerto Rico.
  • The increasing use of sustainable, reliable energy solutions will remove community reliance on fossil fuels while creating economic opportunities for all.
  • Women trained in enterprise skills through the Barefoot College Enriche program will increase education and occupational opportunities for women and girls in remote villages throughout Latin America.

As the world turns its attention to the growing impact of climate change, we are seeing the unique role women can play. This combination of gender equality and environmental sustainability is one of the most compelling reasons we are excited to continue our efforts to support the global work of Barefoot College, especially as it grows in emphasis and impact in Latin and South America.
